In psychology, stress is a feeling of emotional strain and pressure. Stress is a type of psychological pain. ... Stress can increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, ulcers, and mental illnesses such as depression and also aggravation of a pre-existing condition.
Every emotion has:
1) a prompting event,
2) thoughts related to the event,
3) a physical response,
4) an urge to act,
5) an action,
6) final after-effects (which sometimes can actually be a whole new prompting event that starts another emotion cycle)
What is emotional stress?
Emotional stress involves the experience of negative affect, such as anxiety, in the context of a physiological stress response that includes cardiovascular and hormonal changes.
What causes emotional stress?
Financial crises, an unpleasant work environment, or a host of other stressors can cause emotional stress, which sometimes tempts us toward unhealthy coping behaviors in order to escape the pain, especially when the situations seem hopeless.

Ways to manage and reduce your stress:
- Relaxing physical activities such as yoga or tai chi can help to work your body while relaxing your mind.
- Mindfulness techniques such as meditation can strengthen your emotional responses to stress.
